FR :

In 1913, the Belgian company Solvay set up a baking soda factory in Rosignano (IT, Tuscany). She occupied and arranged the landscape, and she built a new city for her workers (houses, hospital, schools etc). For more than 100 years, the activities of the production of this material have affected and transformed the bodies and minds of the inhabitants in depth.

Then, the factory began to reduce its production and its labor requirements and, over the years, many workers left the city. Today, the houses of the Villaggio Solvay workers are resold or rented out on Airbnb for tourists during the summer.

Elsewhere, from 1946, thousands of Italians arrived in Belgium under the "arms against coal" agreements to work in the coal mines of the Liège region. They, they lived for the most part in makeshift accommodation, barracks, and in the middle of the black smoke of the steelworks.

Gaby Mazzantini, was born in Tuscany and she came to settle in Seraing with her husband, who arrived in Belgium with his family as part of the "agreements". It is she who tells us and intertwines these two stories.
